Bracon wasps for ecological pest control–a laboratory experiment

چکیده
Biological control of pest insects by natural enemies may be an effective, cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic pesticides. The cosmopolitan parasitoid wasp species Bracon brevicornis Wesmael B. hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) use lepidopteran as hosts, including insect pests like Ephestia kuehniella or Ostrinia nubilalis . Here, we compare the reproductive success both on E. in a laboratory experiment. We asked (1) how single host larva changes with temperature, (2) it temperature when more larvae are present (3) availability influence efficacy biological agents. In general, differences between have been small. For rearing one larva, 20–27 °C seems appropriate obtain highest number offspring female-biased sex ratio. Rearing braconid wasps than revealed higher total but less per average. Again, numbers hatched at 27 ratio was independent from temperature. Although no parasitoids 12 only few 36 °C, were still paralyzed. 80% all presented temperatures while low presented. conclusion, practitioners can either high varying densities achieve efficacy.

Using Gall Wasps on Oaks to Test Broad Ecological Concepts
Planning conservation of insect herbivores requires knowing what needs to be conserved and developing a set of predictor variables that aid management. We conducted a state-wide survey to examine the species richness of gall wasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) on six oak species dominant in the threatened scrub-oak vegetation in peninsular Florida. Eighty-eight cynipid species were recorded; 23 were...

متن کاملEcological approaches and the development of "truly integrated" pest management.
Recent predictions of growth in human populations and food supply suggest that there will be a need to substantially increase food production in the near future. One possible approach to meeting this demand, at least in part, is the control of pests and diseases, which currently cause a 30-40% loss in available crop production. In recent years, strategies for controlling pests and diseases have...
متن کاملEconomic and ecological perspectives of farmers on rice insect pest management
Understanding farmers’ perception is important in the development of sustainable and cost-effective integrated pest management strategies. Hence, farmers’ perception on rice insect pests and pesticide use was evaluated by selected 112 farmers composed of 77% males and 23% females, over the rice growing areas of North Cotabato, Central Mindanao, Philippines. 62% of farmers that were interviewed ...
